Internet Marketing - The Newest Gimmicks For Your Website Is Probably Not The Answer!

Posted at 6:00 pm under Business

The questions that come to mind for me when I see those things are first and foremost about sales. Do these “cool” features actually increase sales of your product or service? The answer is not a simple yes or no; in fact the answer for most is “maybe”. Let me explain a little bit further what I mean with a “maybe”.

Before I explain the maybe, I want to do a quick recap on history for those of you who do not remember what the internet was like a few years ago. Most people think that all of these features are new. The sad fact is that most of them are not, they are “old” in internet marketing terms. This dates back to the time where “techies” ruled websites and your common user did not have the ability to create a website as easily as they can today. These “techies” were getting so carried away with showing off what they could do, with complete disregard of what actually worked and what didn’t. Needless to say, that the sites that got carried away the most with these “bells and whistles” learned their lesson (well most of them did). So today these sites follow simple, user-friendly formats that all have one thing in common, they sell!

Now let’s get back on track, today we have all kinds of these “techie” things you can use on your website. You have audio recordings, video, talking flash simulating a human being and so on and so forth. All of which seems nice touches to a website, the question still remains: do they in fact work? In most cases the answer does not have a definite yes or no. For most the answer is that there is no proof that these things work other than from the people creating it. If we look at history, and if we look at how much the internet has evolved, the most obvious answer is that history is simply repeating itself. We are getting carried away with “gimmicks” that we hope work, and they we think are “cool”.

Here is what you need to know before you implement any of these “cool” features into your website. An audio or a video for example are and can be very good tools, just like your copy is an excellent tool. The downside to audio and video are that you need to have something to say, and you need to be able to present it in a way that is exciting and sales driven. Most people that try to implement things like these unfortunately do not have what it takes to implement audio or video that really works and are better of just using plain old reliable copy. If you are serious about your internet marketing, you are better of taking the time to learn how to write good copy and improve the copy on your site instead of implementing audio or video into it. The reason is that being able to sound or even look compelling enough to have a call to action takes a while to perfect, you can practice these things and use them in a better way than trying to “beef” up your site. In addition writing a compelling copy to be read or acted out, takes skill and knowledge, which you get from writing copy.

If you really want to use audio and video to make a difference in your business you can do that by using other websites that allow you to post either audio or video recordings. Create short explanations of things you are really comfortable with, create instructional videos, do a review of a product or service that you have actually tried out. What ever it is that you decide to do as an audio or video, make sure that you know exactly what you are talking about before you do it. Because human beings are pre-programmed to sense certain things, and the odds of people seeing through you not being confident or knowing what you are talking about comes through in an audio or video, while written copy is easier to work with.

If you are really serious about your internet marketing you should ask yourself a couple of few questions before you implement these kinds of features into your website. These are questions that are going to be crucial as far as to if you should implement any of these or not, so for your own sake I hope that you are honest with yourself while you answer these.

  • Are you really presentable, both your voice, look and what you have to say?
  • Do I have any knowledge as to if this works for my industry?
  • What do I hope to “add” by implementing audio or video to my site?
  • Am I good enough to be able to “sell” myself using these features?
  • Could I do something else to practice before implementing audio to my site?
  • Is this another repeat of history and am I really improving my sales?
  • Is the ROI for implementing these things high enough to be worth it?
  • The people doing this successfully have something to them, do I have that?
  • Do people buy into these things or am I just “grasping” for gimmicks?

Now if you have made through all the way to this point, there are a couple of more things I would like to mention just for you to think about. If these things really work that well and are really what makes a difference, then why aren’t more of the elite websites out there using them? How come a very limited amount of people use these tech features? Now for the most important question you can ask yourself, are you in this for the long run or are you going to be one of the people that come and go with the “gimmicks”? Because most of the sites that actually survive all have something in common, they follow what has been proven to work. Things that have proved themselves over the last few years, thins have not changed all that much. In fact the only difference between websites that are successful now, and sites that have been successful over the last few years, is that the quality of the design has gone up.

…gimmick sites come and go. Proven formulas stay around! Which category are you in with your internet marketing? Ever heard the saying KISS, the reason it is around is because it is true and more importantly it works, simplicity actually sells!
