So You Want To Be Happier?

Posted at 1:44 pm under Self Improvement

Everyone wants to be happier. Then why are so few people really truly happy? Our thoughts trip us up. Our negative thoughts.

Yep, those pesky little negative thoughts we put so much store in. What is real? What isn’t real? Well, our thoughts are quick to tell us what’s real, whether it really is or not. And because we thought those thoughts, then they’re real, right?

Hmmmm. Let’s examine this a little further.

Thoughts tend to build off each other. Think a negative one and it builds to another bigger, worse thought. And our mind tells us that thought is real. Take that thought and build on it and – whoaaaaaa! pretty soon we have a whole bunch of feel-bad thoughts filling our heads and we’re thinking they’re the real live truth. What result do we get? We’re not happy.

We’re not happy one little bit. There’s not even an inkling of happiness left in our brains we are so consumed by our problems, our troubles, our deficiencies. They rule our lives, they color our outlook, they’re real.

And all those negative thoughts tend to drag us down, down, down, until we’re crawling around with the slime on the bottom of the pond. Some of us are content to crawl around down there for the rest of our lives, firmly squashing any hope of happiness and just exist, exist, exist until we die.

Others wonder why the heck we can’t lift ourselves up to at least the top of the pond and dare we even think it? to the blue sky above the pond, to the moon, the stars, beyond.

There. See? All it took was one little positive thought and pretty soon we’re starting to feel just a little bit better. Just a little bit more up. Add another positive thought and the feeling-good genes that are lying dormant in our bodies really start kicking to attention.

An amazing thing is that things don’t even always have to be going right before we can start getting those happy genes up and running. Open the valve just a little teeny tiny bit, make way for even just the smallest stream of happiness to flow to you and somehow, some way, those negative things aren’t looming quite so big and real.

Keep building on the happy thoughts. Think about things that make you feel happy. And another amazing thing happens. Your brain thinks they’re real. Yeah! Your brain thinks those happy thoughts are real. And so you start feeling happier, in touch with life, up, up, up into the realm of happiness.
