Unlocked Cell Phones - Why Unlocked Vs. Locked Cell Phone
Phones are often sold by wireless carriers for much less than their actual retail value. The phone companies often subsidize the cost of the phones with the expectation that they can recover more than this discounted amount throughout a subscriber’s contract. They try to make sure that the phones they sell can only be used on their particular network, and therefore they lock the phone’s software to their particular wireless network. As an example, AT&T supplied phones only work on AT&T wireless networks.
